RICHLAND CENTER - The Monroe volleyball team took second place in the orange bracket of the Rich-land Center Invitational Saturday.
Monroe (2-12, 0-2 Badger South) lost a tight first match to Fennimore in three sets 17-25, 25-21, 13-15 in pool play. La Crosse Logan beat the Cheesemakers 25-16, 25-21 and Portage knocked off Monroe 25-15, 25-15.
In bracket play, Monroe beat Brookwood in three sets 25-13, 14-25, 15-7. Lodi defeated Monroe in the championship match 25-15, 25-15.
Monroe senior Kari Jordan had 20 kills during the tournament.
"There were some positive things that we did hitting the ball and being very scrappy," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "They are definitely starting to play better. It's coming. It will take some time for them, but it will happen."
The Cheesemakers played without senior libero Lauren Curtis who missed the tournament due to illness. Witt switched right side hitter Haley Doherty to libero.
"We had to adjust our roster a little bit without our starting libero," Witt said. "I thought she (Doherty) did a fantastic job for just being thrown in there."
Monroe sophomore Alicia Kuester had 17 kills, six aces and two blocks. Monroe junior Paige Murphy racked up 39 assists and sophomore Hannah Neuenschwander had a team-high seven aces. Doherty had a team-high eight digs.
