MONROE - The Monroe boys soccer team could steal the motto from the "Postman" starring Kevin Costner, neither snow or rain, nor heat nor gloom, nor winds of change, will stay us from swift completion of our rounds.

In Monroe's case the driving rain and wind didn't slow them down as the Cheesemakers scored four second half goals to knock off Platteville-Lancaster, 4-1 in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 regional on Tuesday. With the second half outburst, Monroe (10-7-3) survived a scare and advances to play at No. 2 seed Evansville on Thursday.

"You can't explain it," said senior Alex Einbeck who scored the go-ahead goal. "You are excited and nervous at the same time for the next game."

Monroe senior Jesse Keizer punched in a goal after a shot by Alex Hendrickson popped in the air. Keizer was at the right spot at the right time to follow up with a goal to tie the game at 1-1 at 57 minutes, 52 seconds. Keizer's goal sparked the Cheesemakers, who scored three goals in about 6 minutes, to take control of the game.

"I saw the kick," Keizer said. "I knew it would be slippery and it popped right up in front of me. It felt great at the end. It was a little scary in the middle. I knew we could come back. We stayed focused. We have been doing that all year. We came back in the end and that is what counts."

Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said the first goal was an important one and it helped open the floodgates.

"We had so many shots off the post and cross bar," Vasquez said. "That kind of gave them confidence. It definitely released some of the nervousness they had. I knew we would have some opportunities to score with the wind in the second half. We had to take advantage of the wind."

Einbeck scored the go-ahead goal at 62:09 and junior Taylor Teasdale scored a goal on an assist from senior Corey Flannery at 63:12 to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 3-1 lead.

"I think we took advantage of them being down," Einbeck said of the go-ahead goal. "We just took some shots at the corner of the net like we have been practicing the last week."

Junior Blake Bast then scored an insurance goal at 73:32 to seal the win. Monroe senior goalkeeper Lucas Koch had five saves. Monroe will now gear up for the showdown with Evansville.

"We know we can play with them," Vasquez said. "I think our guys wanted another shot at them since they tied last week. We just have to play our game and be confident in finishing shots."

In other action, 11th seed Dodgeville-Mineral Point upset No. 6 seed Sugar River 4-2 in a shootout. Both teams were tied at 3 in regulation before the Raiders lost in a shootout.
