Belleville Drops 5-3 Decision To Columbus, Rally’s to Beat Wisconsin Heights 13-9
The Belleville Wildcats scored three runs in the first inning but were blanked the rest of the way as the Columbus Cardinals came from behind to beat the Wildcats, 5-3 on May 5. The Wildcats got only three hits, but Ava Benash, Brynn Prochaska, and Nora Christensen scored first inning runs to give the Wildcats an early lead. The Cardinals got a run in the third and took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.
On May 6, the Wildcats rebounded with a 13-9 win over Wisconsin Heights in Capitol South matchup at Belleville. First baseman Nora Christensen smashed two home runs and drove in seven runners to lead the way for the Wildcats. Sophomore Brynn Prochaska got two hits, scored two runs, and drove in two runs for the Wildcats. Belleville fell behind 7-0 in the third inning, but erupted for 13 unanswered runs over the third, fourth, and fifth innings. For the Wildcats, it was their first Capitol South win this season. They are now 1-5 in the conference and 3-10 overall. Belleville was to host Lakeside Lutheran in a non-conference game on May 9.
Cheesemakers Clobber Delavan-Darien 16-0
The Monroe Cheesemakers clubbed five extra-base hits, including Brinley Roidt’s fourth home run of the season, and senior pitcher Kaegann Paulson fired a two-hit shutout as Monroe rolled over Delavan-Darien 16-0 in Rock Valley Conference softball on May 6 at Delavan. Roidt’s blast highlighted a 2x3 day with three RBIs and two runs scored. Fourteen players saw game action as the Cheese jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and blew the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning. Seniors Sophie Golembiewski, Anastasia Lattin, and Raevynn Jackson each hit a double and Paulson added a triple as the Cheesemakers scored a season-high 16 runs. Monroe improved to 7-2 in the RVC-Valley, and 14-6 overall. The Cheesemakers were to meet the Comets again on May 8 at home and are at Twining Park again to face Clinton on May 9.
Monticello-New Glarus Splits Two Games
The Monticello-New Glarus Ponies played two opponents on May 5 at home and finished with a split.
First, the Ponies scored 12 runs over the final two innings and ripped the Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles 16-6 in a game shortened to six innings on the 10-run rule. Freshman Eliza Legris went 3x4 with a home run and five RBIs for the Ponies. Another freshman, first baseman Mallory Miller, was 2x3 with three RBIs and scored two runs. Senior Karlee Wilkins got two hits, two RBIs, and scored three times as the Ponies racked up 17 hits. Argyle-Black Hawk was led by pitcher Mya McNett, who got two hits in three at-bats and scored a run. Catcher Ava Wiegel went 3x3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Centerfielder Maddy Lange knocked in two runs for the Orioles. Argyle-Black Hawk dropped to 2-11 in the conference and 6-13 with the loss.
In the second game of the day for the Ponies, Johnson Creek hung on for a 6-5 win in non-conference action. Trailing 6-4 in the seventh inning, Monticello-New Glarus scored a run but fell short in trying to tie the game. New Glarus-Monticello trailed the whole game. The Bluejays took advantage of four errors by the Ponies to get two unearned runs. Legris and Miller each hit a double for the Ponies. Wilkins was 2x4 and scored a run. Junior Brooke Ryan went 2x3 and scored a run.
Monticello-New Glarus Slips By Juda-Albany 2-1
Junior Molly Olson and freshman Heidi Olson each got two hits and scored a run and that was all the Monticello-New Glarus Ponies needed in a 2-1 win over the Juda-Albany Panthers in Six Rivers softball on May 6. The Ponies have now won eight of their last nine games and find themselves in third place behind Belmont and Barneveld, who are tied for first place in the Six Rivers. Senior Dalana Trumpy and sophomore Rayna Vogel each drove in a run to provide the Ponies with all of their scoring. Heidi Olson gave up just one run on four hits along with five walks and five strikeouts. All of the scoring in the game took place in the first inning. Freshman Ryleigh Brown scored Jubany’s only run of the game. Junior Emerson Briggs took a tough-luck loss allowing two runs on six hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Monticello-New Glarus improved to 10-3 in the conference and 12-4 overall. The Panthers fell to 6-7 in the conference, 9-8 overall. On May 8, Juda-Albany was set to play at Pecatonica while Monticello-New Glarus was on the road at River Ridge.
Risum Leads Brodhead To 3-1 Win Over Clinton
Brodhead senior Ava Risum is making a bid to earn some major awards again this year. On May 6, the reigning RVC Player of the Year and all-state pitcher did it all in helping the Brodhead Cardinals to a 3-1 road win over the Clinton Cougars. Risum went 4x4 at the plate, drove in two runs, and scored a run at the plate. In the circle, she allowed just one run on three hits while whiffing 11 batters with zero walks. Freshmen Mady Henning and Natalie Pierce each ripped a double and sophomore Keegan Steinke got a base hit and an RBI for the Cardinals. Brodhead was slated to play host to Edgerton in another RVC-Rock game on May 8.
Cuba City Pitchers No-Hit Darlington
Cuba City pitchers Payton Gile and Josie Kruser combined on a no-hitter to beat the Darlington Redbirds 11-0 in five innings in SWAL conference softball on May 5. Cuba City is ranked No. 3 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association poll. The Redbirds did get four batters on base as shortstop Lyla Norgard drew two walks and catcher Raynie Norgard and right fielder Zoe Mau each got on with a walk. The Redbirds stuck out 12 times against Gile and Kruser. Darlington dropped to 1-8 in the SWAL and 1-13 overall.
Pecatonica Scores In The 7th Inning To Thwart Darlington Rally
The Pecatonica Vikings got a seventh inning run to defeat the Darlington Redbirds, 8-7 in nonconference softball May 6 at Blanchardville. Trailing 7-2, the Redbirds put together a five-run rally in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7. But the Vikings scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Redbirds. Senior Mikaela Gross went 2x4 with a double and a run scored and drove in a run while freshman Gretta Schraepfer was 2x3, including a double and scored two runs for the Vikings. Darlington was led by senior Ella Winslow, who had two hits in four at-bats, including a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Maddy Corley drove in a run and scored a run for the Redbirds. Senior Diana Hendrickson pitched all seven innings and got the win for the Vikings. Junior Sydney Wiegel allowed just two earned runs, but took the loss for Darlington. The Redbirds are back into SWAL action on May 8 at Boscobel while Pecatonica hosts Juda-Albany in a Six Rivers game.
Five-Run 5th Inning Carries Barneveld To Win Over Pecatonica
The Barneveld Golden Eagles used a five-run fifth inning to hold off the Pecatonica Vikings, 8-6 in Six Rivers softball on May 5. The Vikings trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning before the Golden Eagles scored five runs to give themselves some breathing room. Freshman Kiaya York hit a three run homer for the Vikings and right fielder Lila Schlimgen got a hit and an RBI for Pecatonica. Senior Diana Hendrickson hit a double and scored a run. Center fielder Mikaela Gross added a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. The Vikings got four runs in the sixth inning to pull to within 7-5 but it wasn’t enough. Pecatonica (6-10, 3-7 Six Rivers) were set to host Juda-Albany on May 8.
Barneveld Whips Argyle-Black Hawk 10-1
The Barneveld Golden Eagles, ranked No. 2 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association poll, cruised past the Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles 10-1 in Six Rivers softball May 6. It was a low scoring game over the first four innings as Barneveld held a 1-0 lead. But the Golden Eagles scored nine runs over the final three innings to win going away. Junior Kylie Butler got one of the Orioles’ two hits and scored the lone run for Argyle-Black Hawk in the seventh inning. Conference co-leader Belmont was the next opponent for the Orioles (6-14, 2-12 Six Rivers) on May 8.
