Parkview-Albany finishes third at Mount Horeb

Parkview-Albany finished third at the Mount Horeb Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 17 with individual champions in Sam Schwengels (182) and Wes Egan (220).

MOUNT HOREB — Parkview-Albany had two champions in Sam Schwengels and Wesley Egan, as the team finished third (151.5 points) out of 15 teams at the Mount Horeb Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 17.

Schwengels (182) received a first-round bye before pinning his opponent in the semifinals. To advance to the championship, Schwengels defeated Austin Depies by a 15-2 major decision. He then pinned Carson Brooks in the second period for the title.

Egan (220) recorded two pins to earn his way to the championship, where he defeated Wyatt Miles by a 6-2 decision.

The Vikings had two second-place finishers in Slater Valley (106) and Wyatt Egan (195). 

Valley pinned his first two opponents in the first period — one in less than a minute — before a 15-0 technical fall in the fourth round. Pecatonica-Argyle’s Aidan Gruenenfelder prevailed in the final round, though, pinning Valley in 2:42. Gruenenfelder had two other technical falls (26-11, 25-6) and a pin.

Wyatt Egan pinned his first two opponents before defeating Brock Weiler in the semifinals by a 10-4 decision. In the championship, Wyatt Egan fell by technical fall (15-0) to Ryder Despies.

Danny Finley (120) finished in the top three, too. After a first-round bye, Finley defeated Connor Gerstner by pin. In the semifinals, Finley fell to eventual champion JJ Poarch in a narrow 8-7 decision. Finley wrestled in another close match, this time coming out on top 6-5 for third.

Brodhead-Juda also attended the invite, finishing sixth with 115.5 points.

Marcus McIntyre took second in the 145-pound bracket as the highest scorer for the Cardinals. He received a first-round bye before pinning Owen Pigeon in just 19 seconds. McIntyre and Parkview-Albany’s Evan Suer faced off in the quarterfinals, where McIntyre prevailed by a 15-0 technical fall. In the championship, McIntyre fell by an 11-4 decision to Jayden Glasbrenner.

The Cardinals had two third-place finishers in Jameson Wallin (132) and Joe Lohmar (138).

Wallin recorded a pin in the quarterfinals before falling in a 13-6 decision to Luke Hartz. In the third-place match, Wallin defeated Brett Suchocki by an 11-5 decision.

Lohmar received a first-round bye and then pinned his opponent in the quarterfinal. Ian Crapp, eventual champion, edged Lohmar 4-2 in the semifinal, but Lohmar took third with a forfeit from Brooks Pernot.

Pecatonica-Argyle, which finished eleventh with 69 points, had two champions in Gruenenfelder and Lukas Orloff (113).

Orloff received a first-round bye before pinning his next two opponents. In the championship, he defeated Cade Birchman by a 6-4 decision.

In other local wrestling action, Monroe traveled to Richland Center on Saturday, Dec. 17. The Cheesemakers finished eleventh out of 17 teams with 78 points.

Isaac Bunker (285) was the lone champion for Monroe, pinning his way to victory. Each of his pins came in less than one minute, with the quickest in just 18 seconds. Bunker is off to a 13-0 start to his senior wrestling season.

Garrett Minder (113) also placed in the top three for the Cheesemakers. He received a bye in the quarterfinals and fell to Jayden Geier in the semifinals by an 8-2 decision. Minder rebounded in the third-place match, defeating Tyler Maxwell by a 12-1 major decision.
