JUDA — One hit. A home run in the seventh inning. It was the only hit of the game for the Cambria-Friesland Hilltoppers as they edged the Juda-Albany Panthers 1-0 in a WIAA Division 5 sectional semifinal on Tuesday, June 2 at Juda.

Third baseman Janell Villarreal’s home run leading off the seventh inning was the Hilltoppers only hit of the game and it was just enough for Cambria-Friesland to defeat Juda-Albany 1-0 and bring the No. 1 seeded Panthers’ season to an end.

The home run was just beyond the reach of center fielder Emerson Briggs and was the only ball hit out of the infield off Jubany pitcher Ryleigh Brown. In the second inning, Cambria-Friesland’s Lydia Schumacher hit a ground ball that looked like it would be a base hit to right, but right fielder Olivia Brooks charged the ball and threw out Schumacher at first to end the inning.

Brown was nearly perfect. The only other batter to reach base against her was pitching counterpart Enya Heller, who walked to lead off the game and reached on by an error by Brown with two outs in the sixth inning. Brown finished the complete game one-hitter with a walk and five strikeouts.

The Panthers were equally baffled by Heller, who allowed just a sixth inning single by Aubrey McCullough. Heller didn’t walk a batter and struck out 13. She began the game by retiring 17 batters in a row before McCullough’s single in the sixth inning.

Juda-Albany ends the season 17-9-1.
