O’s split with RR; Cards solid vs. Clinton

ARGYLE — The Orioles split a softball doubleheader with River Ridge April 1. Both games played five innings. Argyle won the first game 6-1, but lost the second 5-4 after giving up 4-runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the opener, Grace Ganshert went 2-for-2 at the plate with a triple and a walk. Hannah Gierhart had two hits and Jenny Helfvogt drove in a pair of runs. Ava Wiegel added a double. Ganshert struck out 12 on the mound, allowing just one hit, one walk and one unearned run in the top of the first. 

Argyle led 2-1 after the first, then added three runs in the third and another in the fourth.

In the second game, the Orioles put four runs on the board in the top of the first inning, but were held scoreless after that. River Ridge scored once in the bottom of the first, then rallied with four runs in the fifth to walk it off with the victory.

Ganshert was 1-for-3 at the plate, while Lindsay Conners was 2-for-2 with a double. Gierhart and Helfvogt each had a pair of hits, and Chesney Leigh doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Ganshert tossed the first two innings on the mound, striking out four and allowing three hits, a walk and an unearned run. Mya McNett entered in the third inning, struck out two in 2.2 innings of work and allowed four hits and four unearned runs to take the loss.


Brodhead 11, Clinton 3

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals took care of business against the Cougars April 1.

Ava Risum, Sophia Leitzen and Jaelyn Hilliard each had two hits for Brodhead, with Risum, Taetum Hoesly and McKenna Young all doubling. Risum swiped two bags and scored four runs, while Young scored three times. Leitzen scored twice, stole two bases and drove in four.

Risum pitched three perfect innings, striking out 7. Young pitched four innings, striking out nine, hit two batters, allowed one walk, two hits and three unearned runs.

Brodhead scored twice in the bottom of the first and made it 5-0 after three innings. Clinton scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth, but the Cardinals rebounded with four runs of their own in the home half of the inning. Brodhead added two insurance runs in the sixth.
