Nelson PRs at Capitol Quad

Thomas Nelson ran a personal best in the 1600-meter run in Sugar River’s Capitol Conference Quad on Tuesday, April 18.

BELLEVILLE — Sugar River hosted the Capitol Conference Quad with Lake Mills, Lodi and Watertown Luther Prep on Tuesday, April 18. Three individual Raiders finished first, while another three relay teams won their events.

Thomas Nelson, a cross country state qualifier in the fall, PRed in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:36.84. He lapped the final contestants. He also took first in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:23.17. 

Junior Lawrence Vasquez also had a successful day. He finished first in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches. He then took second in the long jump and triple jump, setting personal records, with distances of 19-09.50 and 39-06.75, respectively. 

Addison Disch was the third individual to win her event, running the 400-meter in a time of 1:07.82. 

Grace Nommensen, who took second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.48 seconds, worked with Alex Atwell, Grace Atkinson and Herioli Fraire in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays to take first. The squad finished with times of 52.92 seconds and 1:50.74, respectively. 

The girls 4x800 relay (Ruth Marty, Lucy Melvin, Amber Rossow and Alora Speigel) also took first. They ran the relay in a time of 11:49.02. 

DJ Donnell, who took second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.31 seconds, combined with DeMarcus Conner, Jack Erickson and Gabe Ness to take first in the 4x200 relay. The squad finished with a time of 1:32.85. 

In addition to the championship individuals and relays, Sugar River had another nine athletes take second in their respective events. 

Ruthie Zuber also PRed in the 1600-meter run, taking second with a time of 5:57.20.

Charlie and Andrew Sarbacker tied for second in the pole vault, recording a height of 11 feet. The leap was a personal record from Charlie. In the girls pole vault, Steffi Dopp took second with a height of seven feet. 

Cade Thayer took second to Vasquez in the high jump. Thayer’s height, 5-08.00, was just two inches short of Vasquez’s. 

Keatan Zimmerman finished second in the shot with a 28-01.50 throw.
