EAST TROY — Monroe opened its season on Aug. 17-18 at the East Troy Invite.
On Day 1, Monroe lost to Union Grove 6-1 in the first round, then defeated Fort Atkinson/Cambridge in the second round and swept Edgerton in third round 7-0.
“We played them (Union Grove) closer than we have in quite some time, losing 1-6 with quite a few competitive matches,” said coach Matt Bordner. “It took us awhile to adjust (to Fort Atkinson), but we did a nice job of sticking with it and battled through some adversity. We saw 4 super tiebreakers in this round and won 3 of them, which I think is a great sign for our team and how we can handle pressure moving forward.”
On Day 2, Monroe narrowly defeated Delavan-Darien 4-3 before sweeping Whitewater 7-0.
“We leaned on our singles lineup in this one, with all four players picking up big wins for us. The most significant came from Bralyn Liphart, who came from behind to take a super tiebreaker win which ended up being the deciding match” Bordner said.
Then on Friday, Aug. 21, Monroe hosted Edgerton and Madison Country Day for the first varsity matches on the new courts. There was a rain delay in the middle of the meet, but play resumed when the weather cleared and the squeegees dried the courts. Monroe swept Edgerton 7-0 and Country Day 6-1, with Country Day only fielding a singles lineup.
“Our singles lineup continued to shine, with all straight set wins. Our doubles lineup fought through some serious adversity,” Bordner said of the sweep over Edgerton.
