MONROE — The Cheesemakers opened official varsity action at Badger State Ethanol Stadium on Tuesday, Aug. 25, falling to McFarland 7-2.
In the 29th minute, Monroe made it 2-1 with the first Cheesemaker goal in the new stadium. Emiliano Torres Enriquez penetrated into the box, but McFarland goalie Max Hoyer met him five yards away from the net, deflecting the ball from the left to the right side. That’s where Nelson Lux-Garcia sent the one-touch rebound into the back of the net at the 28:12 mark.
The two teams went into halftime with the Spartans still ahead 2-1. Less than three minutes into the second half, McFarland went back up by two goals off of a set piece score. By the 50th minute, it was already 5-1.
Less than 90 seconds later, Monroe scored its second goal of the night. The Spartans dropped the ball back after a throw-in to Hoyer, who sent a pass up the middle to a teammate, but Monroe’s Josue Torres deflected the ball back into the box, where Cheesemakers senior forward Reece McIntosh took possession and found Torres Enriquez crashing from the left side. Torrez Enriquez sent his first touch screaming past Hoyer and into the back of the net, kicking off another short celebration.
McFarland would score two more goals before the game ended. Braydon Fisher and Fin Tully each had two goals and an assist for the Spartans. Anwar Daya, Liam Wilkie, and Thatcher Martin also scored for McFarland, which out-shot Monroe on target 14-2.
Despite giving up seven goals, Monroe keeper Diego Meyer Castellanos made several highlight-reel saves, including multiple rebounds from point-blank range.
The Cheesemakers were set to play their second game of the season on Aug. 27 at home against Dodgeville/Mineral Point, and then travel to New Glarus to take on the Sugar River Raiders on Thursday, Sept. 3.

DODGEVILLE — The Raiders opened their season with a convincing win over Dodge-Point on Aug. 25. Drew Brueggemann had a hat trick and added an assist to lead the way.
Brueggemann scored the first goal of the season just 11 seconds into the game. He made it 2-0 off an assist from Liam Crawford at 20:16.
In the second half, Brueggemann clinched the hat trick with a goal at 59:42. Kaleb Weber (46:05 and 69:18), Arlo Belknap (58:29) also scored for Sugar River in the second half.
Goalkeeper Taydon DeRouin had three saves.
The Raiders were back in action on Aug. 27 against Mount Horeb in the home opener. Sugar River will host Monroe (0-1) on Thursday, Sept. 3 in New Glarus.
