WAUNAKEE — The Monroe hockey co-op team opened its season with a bang, scoring 11 goals against DeForest on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Ethan Rosenstiel scored first in the third minute of play with an assist from Seth Brandt. Two minutes later, Caden Leatherberry tied it up on an unassisted goal. From there on, the Cheesemakers never looked back.
Gavin Roth broke the tie halfway through the first period with assists from Cole Buholzer and Patrick Alt. The Norskies then committed back-to-back two-minute penalties for an elbow and slashing. Monroe scored on both power plays with goals from Cash Anderson and Carson Kurschner.
In the second period, the Cheesemakers scored another four goals. Easton Dreyfus, Nathan Ratke and Wyatt Janecke scored their first goals of the game, while Anderson recorded his second on a power play.
Janecke opened the third period with his second goal, followed by an unassisted score from Carter Nemergut. To cap the game, Brant scored a short-handed unassisted goal while Ratke sat in the penalty box on a five-minute major.
Xander Obert played all 51 minutes between the pipes, with 19 saves. Brandt led the team with one goal and three assists, while Janecke and Anderson were both one goal away from a hat trick.
Monroe travels to Beloit for a three-game tournament on Nov. 25-26.
