Milton snags one from Monroe

STOUGHTON — The Monroe co-op lost to Milton 2-0 on Dec. 27 at the Stoughton Tournament, despite the favorable stat-line on the score sheet.

“We out-shot them 38-18. Played good, just couldn’t score,” said Barry Einbeck, Monroe’s head coach.

Both Milton goals came in the second period. Jackson Brandl broke the scoreless tie with a goal 3:34 into the frame. Just over six minutes later, Owen King banged in a power play goal, courtesy of a 2-minute slashing penalty by Monroe’s Ethan Rosenstiel.

The Cheesemakers finished the game with five penalties for 10 minutes, while Milton had just six minutes on three penalties. Brock Brandli stopped 18 of 20 shots that came his way.

On Dec. 28, the Cheesemakers were set to play Sheboygan. Results of the game will be available in the Wednesday, Jan. 3 edition of the Times.


Beloit Memorial 6, Baraboo-Portage 1

STOUGHTON — The Knights continued to get stronger as the day went on in the opening game of the Stoughton Tournament Dec. 27. Beloit Memorial went into the first intermission tied 1-1 with the Thunderbirds, but scored two and three goals in each of the next two periods for the dominating win.

Marcus Allen opened the scoring with a goal 7 minutes into the game. Sam Rowald and Cole Rowald each assisted. Baraboo tied it less than three minutes later.

In the second period, Max Allen scored unassisted with less than six minutes to play before the break. Less than 90 seconds later, teammate Preston Mayberry scored a shorthanded goal off an assist from Cole Rowald.

In the third, Payton Whalen made it 4-1 with an unassisted shorthand goal with just 5:04 left on the clock. The wheels fell off for Baraboo after that, as the Knights scored goals at the 14:01 and 14:31 marks. Jayden Piccione and Whalen each scored power play goals. Max Allen, Gavin Brady, Nathan Anastasi and Brady Zimmerman each assisted.

Gentry Grant tallied 20 saves to get the win in net for Beloit. The Knights were scheduled to play Stoughton on Dec. 28 and Monroe on Dec. 29 in the tournament. Results from those games will be in the Jan. 3 edition of the Times.


Eau Claire Stars 4, Fury 1

Warbirds 5, Fury 0

CFM Sabers 1, Fury 0

EAU CLAIRE – The Rock County Fury lost all three games at the WiPH Holiday Classic at the Hobbs Ice Arena on Dec. 27-28. The Fury’s final game of the tournament went into overtime, where Chippewa Falls-Menomonie’s Tessa Leisses scored an even strength goal at the 2:51 mark.

Jillian Traver had 39 saves in net for Rock County. All 33 Fury shots were stopped by CFM goalie Kasandra Herr.

Up next for Rock County (9-5) is a conference game at Viroqua (1-8-1) on Jan. 6.
