Lois Marie Hopkins (née Schuerman), 97, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026. Born on January 2, 1929, in Richland Center, Wisconsin, Lois was the daughter of Harold W. and Regina S. (Sletmark) Schuerman and was raised in Sextonville, Wisconsin.
Lois devoted much of her life to family and education. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse—a fitting start for someone who would go on to shape young lives for decades. She earned her bachelor’s degree from UW–Platteville and spent more than 25 years teaching in the Albany, Wisconsin school district. To her students, she was more than a teacher; she was steady, caring, and influential in ways that often only became clear years later.
Faith was a cornerstone of Lois’s life. She was a devoted member of Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello, Wisconsin, for over 60 years, living out her love for Jesus with humility and grace.
At home, Lois was the matriarch of a growing, vibrant family that she loved deeply. She cherished time together, whether gathered around a table, a piano, or in a busy kitchen.
Lois had a lifelong love of cards and table games; whether it was bridge, euchre, Shove It, or just about any board game, she brought both skill and a competitive spirit that made every game better.
Music was another thread woven through her life. Lois loved to play the piano, often surrounded by children and grandchildren singing along. As one family member once said, “I would recognize Lois’s piano playing anywhere.” That felt about right.
Lois is survived by her children: Dave (Marian) Quade, Jan (R. Gary) Sutter, Jon (Lisa) Quade, Brad (Nikki) Quade, and Bruce (Angelika) Quade, step-children Carol (Dr. Stephen) Huss, David (Kathy) Hopkins, Ann Hopkins, Barbara (Bob) Fowler, and Wendy (James) Shank; 12 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren who will carry her legacy forward.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Frederick, Stanton, and Lyle, her sisters Irene and Beatrice, and her husbands, Edward Quade, Frederick Voegeli, and James Hopkins.
Visitation with the family will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30th, immediately followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m., at Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, Wisconsin. A light luncheon will follow in Fellowship Hall, followed by a private family graveside service. Newcomer Funeral Home & Cremation Services will serve the family [Newcomerfuneralhome.net]. In place of flowers, the family invites you to honor Lois's life by supporting Porchlight [Porchlightinc.org/donate] or Green Cares Food Pantry [GreenCaresFoodPantry.weebly.com/donate]
More than anything, Lois will be remembered for the way she brought people together — through family, faith, music, and even a well-played game. Her life was full, her impact lasting, and her presence deeply loved.
