Legler leads boys to 7th-place finish

Monroe’s Kyle Legler (4780), Brennan Shelton (4783), Dylan Fahrney (4775) and Jake Brower (4771) begin the Junior/Senior 5,000-meter boys race at the Badger Conference Cross Country Challenge at Norsk Golf Club in Mount Horeb. The Cheesemakers finished seventh as a team.

MOUNT HOREB — The Monroe boys finished seventh out of 16 teams Tuesday at the Badger Conference Cross Country Challenge at Norsk Golf Club. 

The girls team finished 16th.

Leading the way for the boys team was senior Kyle Legler, who finished seventh in the Junior/Senior race and eighth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 35.5 seconds.

Sophomore Alex Henry finished third in the Freshman/Sophomore race with a time of 18:15.0 and was the Cheesemakers’ No. 2 runner on the day. Junior Dylan Fahrney (18:42.8), senior Brennan Shelton (19:13.8) and junior Trevor Boll (19:44.2) rounded out the scoring for the Cheesemakers.

Monroe sophomore Jacie Hayes paced her team with a time of 22 minutes, 52.7 seconds.

DeForest won the team title, with Norski senior Jacob Burgener edging Beaver Dam’s Cade Ferron by 1/10th of a second for the top spot overall with a time of 16:49.0.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Jacie Hayes paced Monroe with a time of 22:52.7. Junior Jazmyn Mader (23:44.5), senior Elise Smith (25:08.4), freshman Ellery Bazley (27:37.0) and senior Maddie Bartelt (28:23.2) rounded out Monroe’s scoring.

Monona Grove won the girls team title, and Oregon’s Lauren Beauchaine was the top finisher with a time of 20:16.6.

The Cheesemakers get back into action Sept. 22 at the Janesville Midwest Invitational.
