Cheesemakers give up late lead to Lodi, then top Whitewater for first win of the season

MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers had a 5-2 lead over the Lodi Blue Devils after five innings, but it slipped away and Lodi came up with an 8-5 win over the Cheesemakers in nonconference baseball on Monday, April 20.

The Cheesemakers grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a two run double by Ian Berg and two errors by the Blue Devils. After Lodi closed the gap to 4-2, Berg drove in another run to put Monroe on top 5-2 in the third inning. For the game, Berg was 2x3 with a double and three RBIs. Eli Schaefer was 2x3 with a walk and a run scored.

Lodi came back with four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Blue Devils tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete the scoring.

Trent Wyss started for Monroe and allowed two runs, one earned, on no hits in five innings. Wyss struck out eight and walked four. Lodi took advantage of 10 walks issued by four Monroe pitchers.

Monroe 11, Whitewater 0

WHITEWATER — Senior Marcus Ott got a triple among his three hits, drove in a run, scored two runs, and pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Monroe Cheesemakers to their first win of the season, an 11-0 win in five innings over the Whitewater Whippets in Rock Valley conference, Valley Division baseball on Tuesday, April 21.

Right fielder Kaiden Rieder also had a big day, going 3x3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Left fielder Reece McIntosh and 1B Sky Steinmann each drove in a pair of runs and SS Trent Wyss lined a double and drew two walks to go along with two runs scored.

On the mound, Ott pitched five innings with just one walk and eight strikeouts.

Monroe (1-5-1, 1-2) was scheduled to play Whitewater again, this time at home, in RVC-Valley conference action on Thursday, April 23. The Cheesemakers had a nonconference game scheduled at Belleville on Friday, April 24.
