BRODHEAD — The Cardinals keep their perfect streak, improving to 11-0 with a double-header sweep of the Whippets on Friday, April 21. 

Brodhead outscored Whitewater 29-0, outhit them 17-4, committed no errors to Whitewater’s nine while the pitching staff of Ava Risum and Mckenna Young sat down 21 batters.

In game one, Brodhead went to bat just twice, scoring 10 runs in the first and seven in the second. The Cardinals recorded seven hits in the first inning — all singles — while Alexis Kammerer, Sophia Leitzen (2), Macayla Lang, Jaelynn Hilliard, Jerrica Schwartz and Young collected RBIs.

All seven runs in the second inning came with two outs. Hilliard delivered the biggest blow, homering to center to score three runs.

Leitzen finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Hilliard plated four runs. In the circle, Young allowed just one hit and struck out eight.

Game two lasted five innings, but Brodhead still took care of business. The Cardinals’ biggest inning came in the second, where they put up four runs.

Hilliard and Lang drew back-to-back walks, setting up Alecia Dahl. She singled over the second baseman’s head, scoring Hilliard. Risum’s subsequent single then drove in Land and Dahl for a 6-0 lead. With two outs, Kammerer hit an RBI single to center.

Risum and Young recorded two hits and three RBIs each to lead the offense. Young had the only extra-base hits of the game with a double and home run. On the mound, Risum gave up just three hits and retired 13 batters. 


BRODHEAD 6, MCFARLAND 1

MCFARLAND — The Cardinals jumped on the Spartans early with a four-run first inning en route to a Rock Valley Conference win on Thursday, April 20.

Taetum Hoesly, Young and Kammerer recorded three straight RBI-hits to give Brodhead a 4-0 lead. The top three hitters in the lineup — Risum, Leitzen and Young — accounted for seven of the teams 12 hits in the victory. Risum collected the win in the circle, allowing one earned run on five hits. She struck out six batters.
