Benkman scores four goals in Sugar River win over RV

Senior Anya Brenkman scored four goals and senior Hannah Boldebuck had three assists to lead the 10th-ranked Sugar River Raiders to a 5-3 win over the River Valley Blackhawks in non-conference girls soccer on April 8. On a clear and cool day, the Raiders played their first game ever on the new turf at New Glarus. In the first half, the Raiders scored on a corner kick by Brenkman at 9:00, then scored again as Boldebuck fed Brenkman, who scored at 15:50 to put Sugar River up 2-0 at halftime. River Valley stormed back with three straight goals in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Raiders tied it at 3-3 on a goal at 71:56 from sophomore Molly Maynard. Brenkman scored at 72:58 on an assist from Boldebuck to put the Raiders ahead for good at 4-3, and the Raiders got an insurance goal from Brenkman with Boldebuck on the assist at 74:13 to make the final 5-3.

Senior McKenzie Ohms and junior Savanna Minter combined for two saves in the net for Sugar River. With the win, Sugar River improves to 2-0 on the season and ranked 10th in Division 3. The Raiders, ranked 10th in the first week of the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 poll, travel to Lakeside Lutheran for another non-conference match on Thurs. April 10 at 6:45 p.m.

In other soccer action, Monroe was mercy-ruled by Platteville-Lancaster 10-0 on April 8. The Cheesemakers were set to travel to Reedsburg on April 11, then Edgerton April 15 and Big Foot-Williams Bay April 17. Monroe’s next home game is Monday, April 21 against Jefferson.
