Girls team wins first tournament trophy

MONROE - This past weekend the Monroe Avalanche Girls U12 hockey team hosted and won the Avalanche Shoot Out, a Girls U12 invitational hockey tournament held at SLICE.

Four girls U12 teams competed in the tournament: Janesville Jr. Fury U12, Verona Ice Spirit U12, Viroqua Thunder U12; and Monroe. Each team played three games. The Monroe team was undefeated in the tournament winning all three games earning the championship trophy Sunday morning.

On Saturday, Monroe played the Ice Spirit U12B team and won 4-1.

Emma Ness opened the scoring for the Avalanche with the first goal in the first period, which was assisted by Kayla Einbeck. In the second period, Molly Gross added a goal for the Avalanche, assisted by Anika Einbeck and Ally Einbeck. Then Kayla Einbeck scored an unassisted goal for the Avalanche.

In the third period, the Ice Spirit scored their only goal and that was followed by Kayla Einbeck adding another unassisted goal for Monroe.

In their second game, the Avalanche played the Viroqua Thunder U12 team and finished with a shutout win, 12-0.

Two Avalanche girls earned hat tricks - Kayla Einbeck with four goals; and Emma Ness with three goals.

Ally Einbeck added two goals and Tessa Janecke, Molly Gross, and Cammi Ganshert each added one goal. Molly Gross also earned a play maker and Jenna Schmerbach earned the shutout.

On Sunday morning the Avalanche played the Jr. Fury U12 team in the championship and won 3-2.

The first period ended with no scoring and then the Fury scored first in the second period, followed by the Avalanche's first goal scored by Emma Ness, assisted by Kayla Einbeck.

In the third period the Avalanche's Ally Einbeck scored assisted by Kayla Einbeck giving the Avalanche the lead, but the Fury answered right back, tying the game 2-2.

Then with 6:15 to go in the game Ally Einbeck scored the winning goal assisted by Kayla Einbeck. Kayla Einbeck earned a playmaker award with three assists in the game.

The offensive line - consisting of Kayla Einbeck, Emma Ness, Anika Einbeck, Alyssa Knauf, Tessa Janecke and Ally Einbeck - worked well together, making smart passes and plays. The Avalanche defensive line (Cammie Ganshert, Molly, Gross and Haley Knauf) kept the opponents at bay all weekend.

The Avalanche girls team proudly hoisted the Stanley Cup replica trophy at the end of the tournament. It was the first championship for the young Monroe Avalanche U12 Girls team. Each player in the tournament also received a medal.
