Fury rally to clip Appleton in 3rd

JANESVILLE - Zoie Steig scored three goals to propel the Rock County Fury girls hockey co-op team to a 4-3 win over Appleton United in a regular season finale Saturday at the Janesville Ice Arena.

The Fury (19-3-2) got a slow start with Appleton scoring the lone goal in the first period on a power play. Midway through the second period, Presley Kovacevich scored a goal on assists from Dani Heitsman and Alyssa Knauf to tie the game 1-1 at 8 minutes, 34 seconds.

Appleton responded with two more goals to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the second period.

The Fury scored four goals in the third period to cap the comeback win. Steig scored her first goal at 5:48 on an assist by Heitsman, who earned a playmaker (three assists). Less than 1 minute later, Steig scored her second goal on a pass from Haley Knauf to tie the game at 3.

Steig scored the game-winning goal on passes from Haley Knauf and Heitsman at 11:11 to give the Fury the win.

Goalie McKaylie Buescher was strong in net with 27 saves.

The Fury earned the No. 1 sectional seed in Section 3. The Fury will host the Badger Lightning at 7 p.m. Friday at the Janesville Ice Arena.
