MONROE - Two Cheesemakers punched their tickets to the WIAA state wrestling tournament this past weekend - seniors Dempzy Foley, at 182 pounds, and heavyweight Tyson Welsch. Joining the Monroe wrestlers will be Jackson Hauri and Trent Davis of Brodhead-Juda, Brandon Lange and Nolan Kicmol of Evansville-Albany and Joe Qualgia of Sugar River.
The Monroe duo were two of five Cheesemaker wrestlers to grapple in the WIAA Division 2 Richland Center Sectional on Saturday.
Foley (41-5) won his two matches, first topping Whitewater's Andrew Henschel 6-2 and then pinning Mount Horeb's Ky Kalscheur in 1:46.
Welsch (36-10) knocked off Whitewater's Damean Netzler by a 2-0 decision and then 4-2 on an ultimate tiebreaker over Mauston's Dom Meurett. Welsch lost in the sectional championship to Lange 2-0 but bounced back to pin Josh Marciulionis of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau-Melrose-Mindoro (GET-M) in a time of 1:05 in the consolation championship.
Heavyweight Lange beat Tayvon Hayes of Columbus and Marciulionis by pinfall in his first two matches.
Also competing in the sectional for Monroe were sophomore Alex Witt (16-10) at 145, sophomore Patrick Rielly (34-8) at 160 and senior Sam Kind (37-5) at 170.
Witt fell to Blake Garcia of Prairie du Chien in the opening matchup, 9-0.
Rielly pinned Joe Wopat of West Salem-Bangor in 1 minute, 43 seconds, in an opening-round matchup. In the second round, Rielly was pinned by Max Barreau of Lodi at 3:28. In the consolation bracket, Rielly lost to John Phelan in overtime via sudden victory.
Kind won his opening match to Joey Recob of Dodgeville 14-2 but then lost to Viroqua's Tyler Hannah by a 5-1 decision. In the consolation bracket, Kind knocked off Sawyer Helmbrecht of Lodi by a 7-1 decision before falling to Whitewater's Dillon Martin by an 8-4 decision.
At 106 pounds, Sugar River's Quaglia lost his opening match to Matt Rogge of Prairie du Chien, 7-0. Quaglia then won by pin over Whitewater's Abram Lezama and William Van Dinter of Wisconsin Dells in the consolation bracket. Rogge lost in the sectional title match and by rule advanced to state.
Hauri won the 152 bracket in Division 2, knocking off Jarrett Dolata of Mauston in the final by sudden victory in the championship. Along the way, Hauri also knocked off GET-M's Jaden Anderson and Billy Detholf of Wisconsin Dells. This is the third time the junior Hauri has reached state.
Also at 152, Kicmol of Evansville-Albany advanced to state. Kicmol lost to Dolata in the second round. Kicmol topped Poynette's Justin Taylor by technical fall in the first round and did the same to Miles Steinhoff of Mount Horeb in the consolation bracket. Kicmol then pinned Anderson at 2:37.
Davis rolled to state, winning the sectional at 220 in three straight decisions. Davis beat Prairie du Chien's Colten Wall 3-2 in the first round, then GET-M's Sam Jansen 4-1 in the semifinal. Then in the sectional final, Davis toppled Richland Center's Alex Peters by a 6-3 decision.
In the 113 class, Brodhead-Juda's Russell Waeffler lost his only match 7-0 to Whitewater's Dylan Hughes. Evansville-Albany's Jared Miller pinned Lodi's Jacob Harland in the opening round but then lost consecutive matches to Max Schmidt of Richland Center and Colton Sime of GET-M by pinfall.
Sugar River's Robert Chenoweth lost his only matchup in the 120-pound weight class to Jack Marley of GET-M. Evansville-Albany's Evan Senter did the same, falling to Arcadia's Tanner Klar by a 12-4 decision in the opening round.
Adam Staver of Evansville-Albany lost his first match 15-0 and then fell in the consolation bracket to Dalton Schams of West Salem-Bangor 10-2.
Ben Barmore of Evansville-Albany lost his lone match to Riley Crook 7-4 at 145 pounds.
Kaleb Erb of Brodhead-Juda won his opening match at 160 by pin but lost by technical fall in round two. In the consolation bracket, Erb topped Sabastian Kontaxis of Wisconsin Dells 18-9 before losing to John Phelan of Dodgeville 15-4.
At 195, Evansville-Albany's Collin Roberts lost in his only match, getting pinned at 5:38.
Division 3
At the Mineral Point sectional, four local wrestlers punched their tickets to the state tournament - Paul King and Kolbe Ubersox of Black Hawk-Darlington and Noah Krahenbuhl and Lucas Gilbertson of Pecatonica-Argyle.
King won the 120-pound sectional, toppling North Crawford-Seneca's Trea Steele (pin, 0:42), New Lisbon's Kaleb Baumgart (pin, 3:04) and Fennimore's Alex Birchman (9-5 decision).
At 132, Ubersox won on the back side of the bracket by pinning Mineral Point's Caden Carey in 58 seconds. Ubersox pinned Hillsboro's Chris Heidtman in 46 seconds in round one, but then lost to eventual champion Trevor Wanek by pin in 6:52. On the back side of the bracket, Ubersox topped Orion Starkey of North Crawford-Seneca by technical fall, then ousted La Crosse Aquinas' Albert Flottmeyer via pin in 1:20 to reach the final match against Carey.
Krahenbuhl, a freshman, advanced to state after pinning Zach Wilfong of Deerfield at 2:47 in the consolation championship. Krahenbuhl knocked off Brookwood's Jadin Atha in the opening round 16-4, then pinned Lancaster's Carter Lull in 3:06. In the sectional final, Krahenbuhl lost to Fennimore's Mason Lull by a 13-2 decision.
Gilbertson pinned Aquinas' Noah DeGroot in the 195-pound class in 3:54. Gilbertson then lost to Ithaca-Weston's Cade Nettescheim 11-1 before rebounding and topping Lancaster's Caden Straka (tech fall) and Chase Carratt of Parkview (pin, 1:35).
At 103 pounds, Pecatonica-Argyle's Dakota Doescher lost to Brody Lee of Fennimore by pinfall in 51 seconds. Doescher then lost to Raiden Steele of North Crawford-Seneca 7-5.
Black Hawk-Darlington's Alexis Cruz lost his only match at the sectional, getting pinned by De Soto's Alex Scoville in 5:48.
At 145 pounds, Cayden Milz of Black Hawk-Darlington lost his opening matchup to eventual sectional champion Riley Blair of Fennimore. Milz was then pinned by Ithaca-Weston's Gavin Burch, who would advance to state on the back side of the bracket.
Pecatonica-Argyle's Eastan Schraepfer was topped by Iowa-Grant/Highland's Clayton Kite by a 9-8 decision before pinning Zane Miller of Coulee Christian in 2:39 in the 152-pound bracket. Schraepfer then lost to Marshall's Dylan Hortsmeyer by a 3-1 decision.
At 160, Black Hawk-Darlington's Grady Rielly won his opening match over Nick Cambio of Aquinas 9-3 but lost to Fennimore's Will Ahnen by pin (2:34). On the back side of the bracket, Rielly lost his only match to Ben DeWitt of Brookwood by pin (2:19).
Rielly's teammate, Carson Lobdell, lost his first match of the day in the 170-pound class, getting pinned by Mineral Point's Riley Workman in 2:35. Lobdell was then disposed from the bracket by Hillsboro's Jacob Urban in a 5-3 decision.
At 182, Black Hawk-Darlington's Tyler Mosley lost his only match 11-2 to Noah Friedl of Royall.
Black Hawk-Darlington senior Brody Milz lost his opening match at 220 to Garrett Wilmot of Riverdale (pin, 3:17) but then eliminated Brookwood's Dylan DeWitt via pin in 1:04. Milz was eliminated in the next round, getting pinned by Marshall's Justin Chadwick in 1:12.
In the heavyweight bracket, Leif Bredeson pinned New Lisbon's Joshua Woggon in 49 seconds but was pinned by Lancaster's Tyler Hale in 1:16. Hale pinned all three opponents in a combined time of 3 minutes, 24 seconds. Bredeson would then pin North Crawford-Seneca's Cameron Johnson in just 15 seconds on the back side of the bracket before losing to Ben Wheeler of River Ridge-Cassville by pinfall in 1:28.
Also in heavyweight, Pecatonica-Argyle's Owen Thronson was pinned in his opening round by Brookwood's Trey Kaiser in 18 seconds.
