REEDSBURG - Monroe faced top competition at the Reedsburg dual tournament Saturday with one wrestler finishing unbeaten - a freshman.

Monroe freshman Kevin Klopfenstein went 5-0 at the Reedsburg duals with two pins.

The Cheesemakers finished 2-3 as a team at the dual tournament. Monroe opened the tournament with a 51-23 loss to eventual champion Sparta.

Klopfenstein at 119 pinned Sparta's Jacob Denton in 1 minute, 42 seconds. Justin Helton (135) pinned Derek VonRuden in 1:17. Monroe junior Dylan Schwitz, who finished the tournament 3-2, defeated Nick Anderson 10-1.

Monroe senior Dillon Weckerly (171), who went 4-1, defeated Brandon Brueggen, 3-1. Monroe junior heavyweight Nick Walker, who went 3-2, defeated Steven Stevenson 8-0. Monroe freshman Aaron Hesgard (103), Helton and senior Josh Mayer (189) each finished 4-1. The Cheesemakers were dealt a blow when senior Cory Kundert (215) was injured after rolling his ankle in his first round match and didn't wrestle the rest of the tournament.

Monroe took only nine wrestlers to the tournament and sent some to a junior-varsity tournament.

"We only brought nine wrestlers into the tournament yesterday, but I was very confident that with the nine we brought, we could be very competitive and we were," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "With only nine out of 14 weight classes filled, we were starting in a 30 point hole nearly every match depending on whether or not they had any holes in their lineup. Every one of our guys wrestled their hearts out. I told the guys at the beginning of the day to forget about the forfeits and beat them in the matches that we have and we did just that in every dual."

In Monroe's second match, the Cheesemakers defeated Racine Horlick 39-27. The highlights of the match included Hesgard's pin of Horlick's Dennis Klemck in 2:43 and Helton's pin over Lightning Hernandez in 4:47.

Schwitz defeated Horlick's Alex Amann 8-5 and Mayer pinned Kyle Kinzer in 2:54. Walker made quick work of Rory Griffiths by pinning him in 26 seconds.

Westby defeated Monroe 36-28, but the Cheesemakers received wins from Hesgard, Klopfenstein and Helton. Weckerly bounced back from a 10-7 loss to Horlick's Andres Marquez by pinning Westby's Michael Larson in 1:46. Mayer pinned Zack Crummer and Brad Raasch defeated Walker 2-0.

The Cheesemakers posted their second win of the tournament over River Ridge 39-33. Hesgard, Klopfenstein and Helton each posted wins. Klopfenstein defeated Kevin Seng, 7-2.

Jackson said Klopfenstein looked exceptionally well and showed toughness and great technique.

"He went out against some very good wrestlers and just didn't make mistakes," he said.

Schwitz pinned Ryan Vogt in 3:45 and senior Mason Goff pinned Eric Vogt in 1:20. The Cheesemakers also received pins from Weckerly and Mayer. Weckerly pinned Peter Myers in 1:34 and Mayer pinned Shea Esser in 2:26.

In Monroe's final match, the Cheesemakers lost to Lancaster 37-30. The Cheesemakers received wins from Hesgard, Klopfenstein, Weckerly, Mayer and Walker.

Klopfenstein capped off an unbeaten tournament by pinning Lancaster's Jacob Slater in 1:07. Weckerly pinned Adam Henry in 49 seconds and Mayer pinned Trevor Landon in 42 seconds. Walker added another pin for the Cheesemakers by beating Tyler Eng in 5:12.
