BRODHEAD - The Brodhead volleyball team dominated the net in a four-set win against Clinton Tuesday night.
Brodhead junior Rachel Heller had 19 kills and four aces to lead the Cardinals to a 25-22, 27-25, 21-25, 25-14 win over the Cougars. Brodhead junior Carly Mohns had 15 kills and seven blocks.
Sophomore Payton Wright racked up 44 assists and 12 digs. Senior Heather Shanks had a team-high 17 digs. With the win, Brodhead (6-4 Rock Valley South) is now tied with Parkview for second place in the conference. Brodhead started the season with three starters injured, but Mohns has made her way back from an ACL injury.
"It's super exciting," Brodhead coach Erin Kammerer said. "(Second place) was our goal this season. We knew we would have to work hard with our injuries. It was definitely a team effort to get to share second."
Kammerer said Heller and Mohns played well in tandem at the net.
"She is big at blocking," Kammerer said of Mohns. "She opens up a lot of hitting lanes. They were feeding off each other. Her blocking gives our defense a break."
New Glarus 3, Belleville 1
NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights got some solid serving from Karina Moen and net play by Mandi Sargent to pull out a win over rival Belleville.
Sargent had 12 kills and four blocks and Moen added four aces to lead the Knights to a 25-22, 16-25, 25-16, 25-20 win over the Wildcats.
"I think after the second set they woke up and got fired up," New Glarus coach Casey Boatman said.
With the win, New Glarus (9-13, 6-3 Capitol South) takes sole possession of third place in the conference. New Glarus senior Alaina Legler had 24 assists and junior Sierra Watrud notched nine digs.
Argyle 3, Juda 2
ARGYLE - The Panthers were on the brink of sweeping Argyle before the Orioles stormed back to take the next three games to win the Six Rivers East Conference clash in five games.
Juda knocked off Argyle 25-23, 25-23 before Argyle rebounded to win the final three games 26-24, 25-12, 15-10.
"I just think we came out completely flat and unsure of ourselves on defense," Argyle coach Shelby Rideout said. "To their credit, Juda played to win. They deserved to win those first two games. The score in the first two games didn't reflect how we played. It's hard when you have to climb out of a hole. That was the story in the first two games."
Argyle junior Kim Pink had 15 kills and four blocks. Senior Kayla Ostby racked up 37 assists and Rachel Tollakson had 21 digs and added five aces.
Juda senior Brianna Knudtson had 10 digs and four aces. Senior Brittany Moe added 15 kills.
Junior Tabatha Davis had 34 assists and notched four blocks. Junior Jessica Jordan added four blocks.
Barneveld 3, Albany 0
BARNEVELD - The Albany volleyball team struggled with their serving and receiving against a strong Barneveld squad Tuesday and fell to the Eagles in three games.
With the 25-19, 25-10, 25-17 win, Barneveld clinched the Six Rivers East title.
Albany coach Connie Wuenschel said the Comets, despite going down early in the first two games, could have fought back were it not for their serving and receiving issues.
The Comets led the first game before the Eagles tied it 13-13, but errors allowed the game to slip away.
"We couldn't receive, and we couldn't serve," Wuenschel said. "In the last game we had four net serves. We can't do that. We came out really flat. With our net serves, that didn't help."
When the ball was in play, though, Wuenschel said she was pleased with what she saw.
Albany senior Kirstie Kauk led the way for the Comets with six kills and 11 digs. Junior Felicia Conley added eight assists, senior Carlie Peters notched two aces, and junior Ashlee Berra recorded a block.
Barneveld was blessed with strong play from sophomore Rachel Flaney, who Wunschel said reminds her of a former Comet standout.
"Rachel Slaney reminds me of our Sydney Bump," she said. "They're going to be a force for the next couple of years."
Albany will travel to Monticello Thursday for their last conference match. Wunschel is looking to contain Monticello's big players and finish the regular season on a high note.
"We played them once, and we played them well," she said. "We gotta keep our eye on Jordyn Kubly and Marissa Berg and make sure we are passing and making it easy for us to attack."
Monticello 3, Black Hawk 0
SOUTH WAYNE - The Ponies kept their mathematical chances of a co-Six Rivers East Conference championship alive with a sweep of the Warriors.
Monticello senior Jordyn Kubly had a match-high 10 kills and junior Marissa Berg added nine kills.
Junior Clare Bruns had 19 assists, and senior Amy Silver had five blocks.
Black Hawk junior Mikayla Sigafus led the Warriors with four kills and two blocks. Senior Kelly Neuenschwander added six assists.
Monticello hots Albany to close out the regular season. If Pecatonica can beat Barneveld, the Ponies would share the title with Barneveld.
