ARGYLE - With two outs and runners in scoring position, Argyle proved to be magical, slugging its way to an 11-9 win over Monroe in a Home Talent Sunday League game Saturday night.
After a 45-minute rain and lightning delay before the fourth inning, the Beavers' offense exploded, scoring three runs after two outs in the fifth inning en route to building a 7-2 lead. The Beavers scored eight of their 11 runs after there were two outs.
Argyle's Andy Bohlman also delivered a clutch two-run single in the fifth.
"It was an exciting game with five or six lead changes," Brewers co-player manager Lon Scheuerell said. "It was a long and late night in Argyle."
The Brewers (3-5) committed four errors and the Beavers had five errors. With the win, Argyle improves to 5-4 and has won five of its last six games.
"That didn't help," Scheuerell said. "We didn't play our best defense. It wasn't a great defensive game for either team. Argyle just had a lot of big two-out hits."
Argyle coach Travis Erickson said Bohlman, who went 3 for 6, has been great at setting the table atop the lineup. Argyle's Justin Crotty and Tyler Ritschard were each 3 for 5 for the Beavers. Two other players had multi-hit games including Lance Rossing (2 for 4) and Mitch Pittz (2 for 4).
"I know we will be in every game with our pitching," Erickson said. "We got a lot of timely hits. We don't have a lot of power hitters. We have clutch hits. We will hit a lot of singles and small ball you."
The Brewers had a golden scoring opportunity in the sixth loading the bases with no outs. Adam Krebs hit a deep fly ball that looked like it would drive in a run as a sacrifice fly. Monroe's Nick Diemer raced home, but after Argyle appealed, Diemer was called out since umpires ruled he left too early tagging up.
"That was a big turning point in the inning," Scheuerell said.
The Brewers battled back with a six-run seventh. Adam Francour reached on a dropped third strike and Argyle pitcher Justin Crotty walked Rooney Janecke. The Beavers brought in Jarret Bauman to pitch in relief and Scheuerell greeted him with an RBI double. Adam Scherer knocked in a run on a groundout to cut the Beavers' lead to 7-4. Diemer hit a grounder and Scheuerell scored as the Beavers made a wild throw home. Matt Busjahn and Cody Boals each singled to load the bases and Krebs coaxed a walk to cut the Beavers' lead to 7-6. Shaun Dasher was hit by a pitch that forced in the game-tying run. The Brewers scored the go-ahead run on Francour's RBI groundout that gave Monroe an 8-7 lead.
Boals went 3 for 4 and Busjahn was 3 for 5 to lead the Brewers' 13-hit attack. Scheuerell went 2 for 3. Bauman pitched three innings in relief to get the win for Argyle. He gave up four earned runs on six hits. Crotty started and pitched six innings. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits and was pulled when he ran into trouble in the seventh. Crotty struck out nine and walked two.
"I'm sure they both have dead arms," Erickson said of Crotty and Bauman following wins over Monroe and an 8-6 win over Dodgeville.
Boals pitched seven innings for Monroe and gave up five earned runs on 13 hits. The Beavers answered in the bottom of the seventh when Erickson delivered a two-run single that gave the Beavers a 9-8 lead. Argyle's Pittz came through with a clutch two-run single in the eighth that sealed the win.
"I can't speak for everyone else, I was just trying to put the ball in play," Erickson said of his two-run single he poked through the right side.
