TOWN OF ELK GROVE — A Shullsburg woman was airlifted to a local hospital on May 4 after a horse pulling an Amish buggy entered a highway in Lafayette County.

Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, Belmont Fire, and Belmont EMS responded to Wisconsin 81 in Elk Grove Township for the accident at 5:48 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.

According to Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill, Julie A. Jones, 45, Shullsburg, was traveling westbound on Wis. 81, approaching the intersection of Wis. 126 as an Amish buggy was about to enter the roadway from a private driveway just west of the intersection. The horse pulling the buggy became spooked, causing the buggy to pull into oncoming traffic, where Jones struck the horse.

Jacob B. Kanagy, 20, Cuba City, was the sole occupant and was operating the buggy. He reported no injuries. Jones was transported to UW Hospital via Med-Flight for non-life threatening injuries sustained during the crash.

Jones’ 2013 Ford received disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Southwest Health EMS and UW Med-Flight assisted.
