MONROE - Loaves and Fishes Community Meal of Green County will be celebrating its fifth anniversary Sunday, serving a hot meal at Grace Lutheran Church from 4 to 6 p.m. A special meal is planned with entertainment.
The Loaves and Fishes organization began as a project shared by members of several area churches. It is an ecumenical group of individuals whose mission is to "create community through food and fellowship."
The funds for the meals are supplied by monthly sponsors. The sponsor donation is currently $300 for 2017, but because of rising costs of food, the 2018 sponsorship will be $400. Sponsors in the past have been individual community members, businesses and community organizations.
Although the organization started small, serving only 25 guests for the first meal, it has grown to average almost 125 guests per meal.
Last year, in partnership with members of the Latino community, more than 300 guests were served. At that meal, a Mexican dance group from Freeport performed for the guests. This year, the group partnered with the Literacy Council to provide a meal of diverse foods from the Middle East and India. The goal is to provide nutritious and delicious food that introduces guests to different cultures and customs.
The biggest need right now is finding individuals interested in serving in board positions and teams of individuals interested in cooking a meal once or twice a year. If interested in sponsoring a meal, cooking or serving on the Loaves and Fishes board, contact Sue Curran at suecurran78@gmail.com.
Loaves and Fishes meals are served from 4 to 6 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of each month at Grace Lutheran Church.
