LENA — Illinois State Police District 16 Troopers are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that took place shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday on North Lake Road near West Fairway Drive in Stephenson County.

David J. Bernet, 58, Freeport, was driving a 2005 Chrysler when he left the roadway and struck a tree. Bernet was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bernet’s passenger, Boyd H. Schermerhorn, 80, Lena, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The scene was processed by the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. The crash remains under investigation.
