MONROE - Jerry Duane Schmitt, age 77, of Monroe, WI, formerly of Brodhead, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at the UW-Hospital, Madison, WI. He was born on February 6, 1938 in Janesville, WI, the son of Duane and Myrtle (Newcomer) Sewell Schmitt. He married Ruby Kay Schmid on May 4, 1958 in Brodhead.
Jerry graduated from Brodhead High School in 1956 and following graduation, went in to the U.S. Army Reserve. During high school, Jerry and his mother owned and operated "The Snack Shop' in Brodhead. Jerry worked for the Bancroft Dairy for many years as a milk distributor in Brodhead, Beaver Dam and Monroe. He was also employed as the manager of The Waffle Shop and Swiss Colony Restaurant, both in Monroe, a salesman for Sysco Foods, drove a school bus for the Monroe school system, and was also active with Monroe Youth Hockey, the Monroe United Methodist Church, and Green County Head Start. In later years, Jerry and Kay enjoyed camping in their RV trailer.
He is survived by his wife Kay of Monroe; a daughter, Laurie (Troy) Hillin, Reno, NV; two sons, Jeffrey (Tracy) Schmitt, Ponder, TX, Steven (Julie) Schmitt, Juda, WI; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Hillin, Ryan, Matthew and Brandon Schmitt; a sister-in-law, Ginger (Ed) Waddell, Janesville, WI, several aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 22, 2015, at the D.L NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until time of services. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Online condolences may be made at www.dlnewcomerfuneralhome.com.
