Felonies

The court Jan. 27 sentenced Dwayne P. Helmer, 30, Albany, to three years probation, after he pleaded no contest to child abuse charges.

The court also ordered Helmer to pay $105 in fines and court costs; to undergo an alcohol assessment and mental health assessment or treatment; not possess or consume alcohol or non-prescription drugs; not enter establishments or store areas that sell intoxicants; and have no contact with the victim or her family members except through a probation agent or Human Services.

Court records indicate Helmer, on or about July 14, 2010, in the Village of Monticello, recklessly harmed an 18-month-old child by repeatedly slapping her face and buttocks, causing bruises, abrasions and swelling to her back, cheek, eyelid and neck.

He was charged with child abuse to intentionally cause harm, a class H felony.

He faced up to 6 years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

In another case, the court sentenced Helmer to 62 days in jail and three years probation concurrent with other probation sentences, after he pleaded no contest to charges related to the use of a dangerous weapon.

The court also fined Helmer $511 in fines and court costs.

Court records indicate Helmer, on or about Dec. 26, 2010, in the Village of Albany, pulled out filet knife hidden in his back pocket and repeatedly lunged at a person, trying to stab him in the abdomen, and then swung a hammer at him.

He was charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety with the use of a dangerous weapon, a class G felony, and carrying a concealed weapon, a class A misdemeanor. He faced more than 10 years in prison and up to $25,000 in fines.

- The court Jan. 28 entered a plea of not guilty and scheduled a March 15 district attorney conference for Jeffrey Joseph Powers, 49, Madison, who stood mute to charges of disorderly conduct and bail jumping.

Court records allege Powers, on or about June 19, 2010, in the City of Brodhead, caused a disturbance in a public place by screaming and repeatedly hitting a person in the face, causing her nose to bleed, which was in violation of his May 5, 2010, Dane County bond agreement not to have contact with the same person and not to consume alcohol.

He is charged with disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor, and two counts of bail jumping, a class H felony. He faces more than 12 years on prison and more up to $21,000 in fines, if convicted.

Misdemeanors

The court Jan. 27 sentenced Zachary Walter Meritt, 21, Monroe, to 24 months probation, after he pleaded no contest to charges of battery and intimidating a victim.

The court also order Meritt to pay $686 in fines and court costs; obtain and maintain employment; obtain GED, HSED or high school diploma; undergo domestic abuse assessment; and have no contact with the victim.

Meritt is eligible for expungement upon successful completion of probation.

Court records indicate Meritt, on or about Nov. 28, 2010, in the City of Monroe, intentionally harmed a person by shoving her against a wall and prevented her from calling 911 by taking her cell phone. He was charged with battery and intimidate a victim to dissuade reporting, both class A misdemeanors. He faced 18 months in jail and $20,000 in fines.

- The court Jan. 24 scheduled a Feb. 22 district attorney conference for Dianna Renee Sassaman, 46, Monroe, who pleaded not guilty to charges of retail theft under $2,500, a class A misdemeanor.

Court records allege Sassaman, on or about Nov. 28, 2010, in the City of Monroe, took merchandise from a store. She faces up to nine months in jail and $10,000 in fines, if convicted.

She is free on a $500 signature bond.
