JANESVILLE — Blackhawk Technical College has been selected as the recipient of a $57,000 grant from the Forging Industry Educational & Research Foundation (FIERF), a supporter of the Forging Industry Association (FIA).
The grant will help to bolster the manufacturing sector in Rock and Green counties by increasing the number of highly qualified manufacturing technicians through the implementation of the Manufacturing Automation Cell (MAC) project, a collaborative effort in partnership with Scot Forge, a member of FIERF, that will actively participate in providing technical assistance, materials and invaluable plant visits that will enrich the students’ understanding of industrial practices and processes.
Bryan Coddington, Engineering Technology Instructor at Blackhawk and lead of the MAC project, said the MAC project will help to reduce the skills gap faced by many employers. Through hands-on, work-based learning, students will gain the skills and confidence needed to prepare them for entering the workforce much more quickly than previous training methods.
“The MAC project is an opportunity to redesign the way we provide technical education in manufacturing at Blackhawk Technical College,” Coddington said.
With this grant, Blackhawk is well-positioned to develop a talented and well-prepared workforce that meets the demands of the manufacturing industry.

New partnership provides patrons a central location to enjoy music in harmony
The Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra’s 2023-24 Season begins on Oct. 8 at a new location. The World of Tchaikovsky will be performed in Blackhawk Technical College’s Conference Center located at 6004 S. County Road G in Janesville.
“There is community building in the shared experience of enjoying live music together. The Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra is a Community Organization that serves two cities. In bringing those two cities together in one space, we create a broader and more impactful community focused on keeping the performing arts alive. We are able to fulfill a large part of our mission thanks to the partnership with Blackhawk Technical College,” said Executive Director, Sara Lemen.
“I am thrilled for Blackhawk to partner with the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra. Through this collaboration, we aim to foster a deeper appreciation for the arts while enriching the cultural fabric of our campus and beyond,” Pierner said. “We are excited to create a platform where the symphony’s performances can inspire and uplift students, faculty, staff and all those who join us.”
The Symphony’s 2023-24 Season is appropriately titled Music in Harmony highlighting the new partnership and the bringing together of Patrons from across the area. Blackhawk Technical College is committed to making it easy for guests to get to the new location. Signs will be placed around campus to help direct people to the new spot.
