A Place in History: The Masonic Lodge

MONROE - The oldest civic organization in Monroe is Smith Lodge No. 31 of Ancient, Free and Accepted masons.

According to the "Pictorial History of Monroe, Wisconsin," the organization was organized on April 26, 1850 in Monroe, eight years before Monroe was incorporated as a village.

The Masons, a fraternal organization that began in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, has a membership of about 5 million people around the world with about 2 million members in the United States.

The Masonic Lodge was built on the north side of Monroe's Square in 1930. The building is located at 1613 1/2 10th St.

Since its early days, the building also houses businesses on the first floor.
