MONROE — Green County’s race for the Branch One Circuit Court Judge came to an end with Faun Marie Phillipson narrowly edging out opponent Jane Bucher in the April 6 election.
According to the County’s unofficial results at 100% reporting, Phillipson ended the night with 4,142 votes, a mere 85 more than Bucher. Write-in candidates received 268 votes. Phillipson, who was celebrating her birthday the day before the election, becomes the first woman to serve as judge in Green County.
Incumbent judge Tom Vale ran unopposed in the Branch Two race.
At the state level, Jill Underly of Blanchardville, who has served as the Superintendent at the Pecatonica School District for the last six years, won the race for state superintendent. Underly resigned from her position at Pecatonica due to her running and the district has since announced Kathleen Coppenbarger, Danielle Scott and Amy Vesperman as finalists for the position.
Underly received 5,364 votes in Green County. Opponent Deborah Kerr received 2,927. In the state, Underly collected 526,000 votes to Kerr’s 386,053.
“Thank you, Wisconsin!” Underly wrote in an 8-part Twitter thread April 7. “I am honored and humbled by the trust voters have placed in me and I’m overcome with gratitude for the incredible support we’ve had throughout this journey.” She went on to thank her husband, children, campaign team, “countless volunteers, our grassroots donors and all of the leaders & organizations who endorsed” her. She also thanked the Pecatonica Area School District and community members, adding that she was grateful to have served the area for the past several years.
“Here’s my promise to every family, student and Wisconsinite young and old, regardless of who you voted for: I will always do what’s best for OUR kids. I’m ready to get to work and build a stronger, more equitable public education system that provides every child, every day with the world-class public education system they deserve.”
Monroe, New Glarus and Darlington all passed school district referendums, while Black Hawk’s referendum failed.
Monroe’s referendum received 2,530 “yes” votes (71.49%) to 1,009 “no” (28.51%). The school district asked voters to approve facility upgrades worth an estimated $5.6 million for Northside Elementary School, which was build in the late 1960s. Upgrades will include maintenance and repairs, safety upgrades, lighting and electrical updates, HVAC replacement and to become further ADA compliant.
“We’re humbled and grateful for the support of the community and we look forward to making these improvements to make Northside Elementary an even better place for our students to learn, and for our parents and community to gather,” Monroe District Administrator Rick Waski said in a video posted to the school’s Facebook page. “These needed improvements will not only improve the environment for learning at Northside, but will also allow us to be in a position where we can be confident that Northside is in good physical and operational shape for at least the next 20 years.
New Glarus passed 1,046-443 (70.25% to 29.75%). The district will build a new primary school and make improvements to the other existing structures. The decision comes after more than three years of long-range planning, which included a facility study and extensive community feedback.
“We are extremely thankful to the New Glarus community for their input and feedback throughout this process, and for their overwhelming support of this referendum,” New Glarus Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Thayer wrote in a press release. “The new primary school, addition to the high school and other renovations and improvements will provide high quality learning environments for our students and gives us the necessary space we need as we continue to grow.”
New Glarus will break ground likely in the spring or summer of 2022, with the renovated buildings ready by late summer. The new Primary School is expected to be completed by Summer 2023.
In Lafayette County, Darlington passed its referendum 491-419 (53.9% to 46.0%).
Black Hawk failed in Green County 75-52, and in Lafayette County 484-206. In all, there were 559 “no” votes (68.4%) to 258 “yes” (31.5%).
