MONROE — Construction began this week at Monroe Public Library. The project is expected to take five months, and the library will remain open for most of that time.
The work begins on the second floor and the lower level, with the creation of new walled-in spaces on the second floor, a new lobby in the basement, and refreshed restrooms throughout. In February, the first floor will close as the project progresses to the new central staircase, the checkout desk, and the entrance lobby. At that time, the second floor will be open to the public.
Currently, the first floor is open, and some things have moved around: a selection of children’s books, as well as familiar items like dress-up clothes and a coloring table are available in order to welcome children and families. Adults can find a small collection of fiction in all genres near the new books. People of all ages may use the computers.
The library provides curbside service on demand, so patrons can pick up their books without having to enter the library. In addition, the library now has outdoor lockers for materials pickup. However, some services are suspended or limited due to the constraints of the project. On-site programs will not take place in December or January. Meeting rooms and study rooms are unavailable.
This project is the culmination of the library’s fundraising efforts of the past few years. The work and dedication of so many donors and volunteers will finally come to fruition. In recent months, the Library Board of Trustees approved final plans and went to bid, selecting McKee Associates as the general contractor. Architecture firm Dimension IV and several local subcontractors are also part of the project.
The staff remains committed to providing high-quality service to the community throughout the construction project. Those with questions or needing assistance can ask the library to direct them to an appropriate alternative. Call the library at 608-328-7010 or follow the project online at monroelib.org/
