MONROE — Union Presbyterian Church, 2707 5th Street, is having a Good Friday Cantata at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 18.
The Solemn Shadows was inspired by the medieval tradition of observing Tenebrae, a service of shadows on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday.
This is a sacred time for Christians to reflect on the events of Jesus’ passion.
The Solemn Shadows is a series of five tableaus from the final days of Jesus’ life.
At the beginning of each tableau or movement in the work, a brief scriptural paraphrase is read, followed by a moment of silence and the slow tolling of a single bell three times. After a moment of silence, one of the candles is extinguished, then the choir sings the anthem.
