MONROE — During the Monroe City Council meeting Monday, Aug. 5 a restored painting from Carl Marty Sr. was presented to the city by the Questers. The Monroe Questers had taken on the project of having the painting restored by Len Lassandro, master conservator.  The painting was originally given to the city in the 1960s in memory of their father Carl by his two sons, Robert F. and Walter F. Marty.  Mayor Louis Armstrong in turn presented the painting to the Green County Historical Museum where it will hang.  A special viewing will be scheduled in the near future.

Carl Marty Sr. was an integral part of the cheese industry in Monroe and was instrumental in starting the Green County Historical Society and the New Glarus Historical Village.  He also spearheaded the fund drive to rebuild Turner Hall after it burned to the ground in 1936.  He always loved to draw and attended the Chicago Art Institute to enhance his skills.  He painted over 600 paintings in his lifetime and was also a published poet.  Carl Marty’s paintings can also be found at Turner Hall, Minhas Brewery, Colony Brands, Green County Historical Museum and the National Historical Cheesemaking Center.
