MONROE — Sharing a meal and its story has always been an important expressive outlet and means of profound human exchange. And “breaking bread together” has taken on new meaning in the midst of a pandemic that has isolated neighbors and led to food insecurity for so many.

Proyecto Conbíf is a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, culturally specific food-based project that intersects performance, documentation, location, heritage, and ancestry — an experimental piece about home. The Monroe Arts Center and the MultiCultural Outreach Program invite interested persons to join the community dinner and conversation at 5 p.m. on Feb. 7.

Register for the event at monroeartscenter.com/communityevents. Once registered, a Zoom link will be provided and an instructional video on the preparation of an authentic Puerto Rican meal will be led by artist CK Ledesma. Prepare the meal for dinner on Feb. 7. At 5 p.m., join the community on Zoom where the Proyecto Conbif artist will discuss the history of the meal. The conversation will be in English and Spanish.

Erick “Ck” Ledesma is an interdisciplinary visual artist from San Juan, Puerto Rico who explores themes of identity by incorporating and integrating influences from his personal culture focusing on community engagement practices. Ledesma has a home in Milwaukee, but still calls Puerto Rico home. He began his art education in the Central High de Artes Visuales in Santurce, San Juan. There he attended middle and high school specializing in ceramics, studied at the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras where he majored in anthropology and at La Escuela de Artes Plasticas where his focus was in Art Education.

“Let’s All Come to the Table” is a free community event. There are a limited number of ingredient packages that can be reserved at registration and will be available for pick up at no charge at the Monroe Arts Center. Registration ends Feb. 3.
