Lafayette County Democratic Party to host FDR dinner, Fireside Chat with John Nichols
Community Brief

DARLINGTON — Accomplishments between Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joe Biden can be compared, and a Lafayette County Democratic Party dinner and fireside chat with keynote speaker John Nichols will discuss the claim. The FDR Dinner event is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. on May 29 at the Darlington County Club, 17098 Country Club Road.

All people are welcome, regardless of political affiliation or opinion. Dinner is included in the price of the ticket. Tickets are available at the Lafayette County Democratic Party Office during open office hours: Wednesday 3:30-5:30 p.m., Thursday 4:30- 6:30 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are also available by calling 608-520-0303; or via ActBlue on the Lafayette County Democratic Party Facebook page.

Nichols is the national affairs correspondent for The Nation magazine and the associate editor of The Capital Times newspaper in Madison. The author of more than a dozen books on media and democracy, his latest book is the New York Times bestseller “It’s OK to be Angry About Capitalism,” which was written with Senator Bernie Sanders. A regular on MSNBC, the BBC and RTE-Irish Radio, he has covered elections in more than a dozen countries and recently profiled Vice President Kamala Harris. His family has lived in Wisconsin since the 1820s, when his great grandfather settled in Mineral Point and eventually served in the first Wisconsin state legislature. A number of his ancestors farmed and ran small businesses in Iowa, Grant and Lafayette counties.

It is argued that Biden inherited the worst set of crises since Roosevelt and had a slim democratic margin in Congress. The pandemic and a weak economy, as well as threatening climate and rising racial tensions didn’t stop him from quickly taking charge as he delivered on his vaccine distribution promises, enacted a huge economic relief plan, began a restoration of America’s leadership on climate change and acted as a force for racial justice. Roosevelt entered office with the economy near collapse and a severely depressed public mood, and he took bold steps to reverse course. He not only saved the country’s banks in his first week but helped to pass major legislation in his first 100 days to build the foundation of the New Deal.
