Fair highlights volunteerism

MONROE - On June 16, the Green County Volunteer and Service Organization Fair, hosted by Blackhawk Technical College, will highlight how residents can get involved with the many community non-profit and service organizations in the area.

The fair will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Blackhawk Technical College campus, 210 4th Ave., Monroe.

"The Volunteer and Service Fair is a great way to find out more about helping the community in a one-stop format," event organizer Melisa Schmidt-Kjerstad said. "Many times people aren't sure how to get involved, and this is an easy way to learn about the benefits of volunteering."

The fair, which is free and open to the public, includes representatives from more than 20 local non-profit and service organizations, including: Girl Scouts, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Green County EMS, Pleasant View, Future Forward; and many others. There will also be complimentary refreshments, giveaways and a free gift for the first 25 attendees. Journalist to focus on dairy farmers

BRODHEAD - Oral historian, journalist and former dairy farmer Ed Janus, author of the new book, Creating Dairyland, will interview a panel of long time Green County dairy farmers at Brodhead High School on Monday, June 6.

The presentation, set for 6 p.m., is part of the Smithsonian exhibit, "Key Ingredients: America by Food."

"Dairying is a story nobody knows anymore," Janus said in a press release. "We drive around the countryside and see the prosperous farms, but little do we know what went into it. Dairying saved agriculture in Wisconsin. The cow created Wisconsin."
