A fond farewell from Green County's Fairest

Gilson
Hello everyone, my name is Rachel Gilson, the 2017 Green County Fairest of the Fair. My year as the Fairest is quickly coming to an end, and this experience has been nothing but amazing.

Throughout the year, I have been busy traveling around Green County attending events, festivals and parades to encourage others to visit the fair and see projects that the county's youth worked hard on all year.

I also competed for the 2018 Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs position, where I was able to learn more about county fairs in Wisconsin and made new friends along the way. Being the Fairest, I have been able to improve on my communication skills and learn what I want to do in the near future. Most importantly, I had the chance to give back to the Green County Fair where I was an exhibitor for 12 years as a 4-H and FFA member. The fair is a place to remind the public of the key role that agriculture will continue to play in our economy and daily lives.

Fairs not only promote agriculture, but they also supply jobs and provide opportunities for youth and adult education. I encourage everyone to take time in the future to visit your local county or state fair, take a stroll through the barns and exhibition hall and strike up a conversation with a young exhibitor about their project.

I want to thank the Green County Fair board for offering this position and for everything you do for the Green County Fair; my coordinators, Julene Elmer and Theresa Wyss, for being there for me when I needed help and encouraging me to get out of my comfort zone; and Mahlkuch Electric for continuing to sponsor the Fairest program.

If you have a love for the fair to share with others, then this is the opportunity to do so. If you are interested in becoming the 2018 Green County Fairest of the Fair, go to www.greencountyfair.net to apply and get more information about the position. Applications are due by May 1.
