175 years celebrated with weekend events

MCCONNELL, Ill. - The Town of McConnell will celebrate 175 years Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2.

On Saturday, June 1, a town-wide garage sales will be held all day.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The oldest man and woman presentation will be held at 11 a.m. at the museum. There will also be christening of a donated flag pole from the Royletta Price and Wayne Price families. Vendors will be open on the side of the museum room from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Pecatonica River, at Bobtown Landing, will be open all day Saturday, depending on river levels.

The fire department open house will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. There will be a smoke house, building tour, truck display, equipment demonstration and possible water fights.

The historical society lunch stand will serve barbecue and chips and drink starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church.

A strawberry social will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church. The prince and princess will be presented at the strawberry social. Those interested in becoming the princess or princess can contact Cindy Heid 815-297-3694. Those who are interested must have a 61050 address.

Grace Free Methodist Church will hold an outdoor movie, "Ring the Bell," starting about 8 p.m. or dusk, with free popcorn and drink. Those who attend should bring their lawn chairs or blankets.

A community worship service is set for 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 2 at the Grace Free Methodist Church with both Grace Free and the United Methodist churches worshiping together. A community picnic to be held at noon Sunday, June 2 at the United Methodist Church. Food and drinks will be provided. Volleyball, bag toss and a bouncy house will follow. Those who attend should bring their lawn chairs.
