ALBANY - Albany volleyball coach Connie Wunschel couldn't wait to sample the cake and ice cream in the high school lobby Tuesday night after the game.

Fortunately for Wunschel, the Comets quickly cruised to a season sweep of Barneveld with a 25-10, 25-19, 25-21 win on senior night.

"They played their roles," Wunschel said. "They did what they needed to. It's all about teamwork."

Albany (12-7, 8-4 Six Rivers East Conference) jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first game and never looked back.

The Golden Eagles built a 13-8 lead in the second game. The Comets, behind senior Jordan Mauerman, stormed back. A tip kill by Mauerman tied the score at 13. Mauerman, who had five of her eight kills in the second game, set the tone for the comeback with kills on two of the next three points to give Albany a 16-13 lead.

Mauerman was focused on playing aggressive at the net.

"I knew that was my part," she said. "That is my favorite part of volleyball. I was doing my job. It's important to cover tips."

Fellow Albany senior Devan Brugger, who had 15 digs, didn't need to be reminded of the Comets' trend of struggling in the second game of matches this season.

"Since we have a tendency to do that in the second game, we had to be aware of it and worried about it," Brugger said. "We couldn't say, 'We will get it back.' We had to fight for it.

"We have been coming together the last four games. It's a good way to end conference."

In the third game, the Comets' lead ballooned to 14-8. The Golden Eagles had a late rally sparked by senior Caitlin Jordee, whose three straight aces cut the Comets' lead to 23-20. Albany never relinquished the lead, withstanding the rally with strong net play by Mauerman and sophomore Sydney Bump.

Bump had a team-high 10 kills and five blocks. Albany sophomore Courtney Pfeuti posted 10 assists.

Wunschel is excited about the emergence of Mauerman as a force at the net.

"She (Mauerman) was on fire," Wunschel said. "She is starting to get that court sense we were missing in the beginning."

Now Albany awaits its postseason fate with the regional tournament seeding meeting tonight.

Wunschel said the Comets probably will get a No. 5 seed and a regional opener against Williams Bay or Black Hawk.
