POTOSI - The Black Hawk girls basketball team played without Jen Wellnitz, who suffered a concussion in the season opener last week, and lost a non-conference game to Potosi 69-33 Monday night.
"It was tough sledding," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "We might be without (Wellnitz) on Friday. She will have to get some clearance before we know where she is at."
The Chieftains jumped out to a 15-4 first quarter lead against the Warriors and extended their lead to 37-14 at halftime.
"They just pressured us fullcourt, and we really weren't very strong with the ball," Flanagan said. "We were on our heels from the get-go. When we did break the pressure, we just failed to convert. We looked like a team that was lost and didn't know what to do. There was nothing we could do to change the course of the game."
Black Hawk junior Mikayla Sigafus scored a team-high 16 points. Senior Abby Schiferl and junior Michelle Flanagan each added five points.
Black Hawk (1-1) shot just 9 of 27 from the free throw line.
"That didn't help us," Flanagan said.
East Dubuque 63, Argyle 39
EAST DUBUQUE - Despite having a sizable advantage in the post, the Argyle girls basketball team could not overcome the fast play of East Dubuque and fell to the Warriors 63-39.
After getting outscored 31-11 in the first half, Argyle head coach Kurt Ritschard employed an aggressive zone defense and an offensive emphasis on getting the ball down low to junior Jessica Treuthardt.
The change of pace helped, with the Orioles gathering several turnovers and feeding them into Treuthardt who finished the game with 17 points. Senior Rachel Tollakson added nine points.
"I thought we picked it up offensively and got more turnovers with zone defense," Ritschard said. "I thought Jess played really well down low. She had everybody outmatched by three inches. We tried pounding it in as much as we could. We just fed off the energy of Jess scoring on the inside."
The second-half surge could not close the gap. The Warriors, led by their quick guards, hit seven three-pointers in the game including five in the second half. Four players scored in double figures.
"We just came off the bus really flat," Ritschard said. "We tried pressing them early, and they kept getting layup after layup. They were just a very aggressive, good-shooting team."
Argyle (0-2) will travel to play River Ridge on Thursday.
