BARNEVELD - Freshman Matthew Myers scored a game-high 25 points and drilled six 3-pointers to lead Barneveld to a 46-43 win over Black Hawk Tuesday, Feb. 4.
"He (Myers) shot it well," Black Hawk coach Corey Manlick said. "We just went under some screens and he got into a rhythm. He made some tough shots for a freshman. As a freshman, I was very impressed with how composed he was."
With the win, Barneveld (12-4, 5-2 Six Rivers East) moves into a three-way tie atop the conference with Albany and Monticello at 5-2. Black Hawk (12-5) and Pecatonica (8-9) are each one-half game back at 5-3.
Black Hawk is 4-3 in its last seven games with conference losses to Pecatonica and Barneveld and a loss to No. 2 ranked Cassville.
"We don't like accepting losses," Manlick said. "The losses are only going to make us better. We have to understand that we are not this invincible force. We will make mistakes. It will take all five guys working together as a team. We have to get back at it and work for a conference title. We have to hope for some things to happen and get back into it."
The Eagles jumped out to a 19-4 lead on the Warriors in the first quarter.
"We had some opportunities early," Manlick said. "We missed some layups and that changed the dynamics of the game. When you spot them 15 points, it's hard to overcome that against a good team. I'm proud of the way our kids fought back. If we stay consistent for 32 minutes, we are right there."
The Warriors battled back from the 15-point deficit outscoring the Eagles 22-13 in the second and third quarters. The Warriors limited the Eagles to just four points in the second quarter.
Black Hawk junior Heath Butler scored a team-high 21 points and senior Seth Butler added 13 points.
