MONROE - After a surprise run to sectionals as a team last year, the Monroe boys golf team is looking to continue building a foundation of success when it tees off at the Stoughton Invitational Monday.

Monroe returns four of its top five golfers from last year's team that finished second in the regional and qualified for the Evansville sectional. The top two players for the Cheesemakers this year are expected to be senior Matt Miller and sophomore Nick Baumann. Both Miller and Baumann shot an 80 to tie for seventh at the regional last year.

"Our expectations as a team and individually are high," Monroe coach Braden Rindy said. "We feel like we have a good shot of competing for a conference title as a team and returning to sectionals. One of our goals is to make a good run at conference and get back to sectionals and make a run to state."

The Cheesemakers will open the season Monday at the Stoughton Invitational. The top five players for the Cheesemakers will play an 18-hole tournament and will then host Fort Atkinson in the Badger South Conference opener Tuesday at the Monroe Country Club. The Cheesemakers finished fifth (2-4) in the Badger South last year and Rindy is looking forward to Monday when the team tees off the season.

"We have two No. 1 guys on our team," Rindy said of Miller and Baumann. "We know we will have two solid scores every time out. Anyone of them can compete with another team's No. 1."

The other returners include junior Tanner Thompson, sophomore Kyle Krebs and senior Eric Bush. Rindy said six players are vying for the No. 4 and 5 spots.

Monroe sophomore Devon Boeck has impressed Rindy early on in practice.

"He has been shooting consistently good scores," Rindy said. "He would probably be our No. 4 now."

There will be a competitive battle for the final two varsity spots and Rindy said it could switch throughout the season. Freshman Collyn Wilde and senior Austin Murphy are also battling for one of the varsity spots.

"He (Wilde) can really hit the ball," Rindy said. "He just has to get more consistent. I like that we have competitiveness when you have players who can move up and down."

Rindy said the more consistent production the Cheesemakers get from their No. 4 and 5 golfers will be the key to moving up in the conference chase.

"We have to be more consistent with our five players," Rindy said. "A couple of bad scores can really ruin a match. We need solid play from all five guys so we are better choosing the best four scores."

Rindy expects Madison Edgewood to be the favorite to win the Badger South Conference and he sees Fort Atkinson as a contender. Monroe will host Fort Atkinson Tuesday and Edgewood May 11.

"They (Edgewood) are always the favorite," he said. "They are just always so consistent."
