MINNEAPOLIS — With an 80-56 loss to Penn State in Round 2 of the Big 10 tournament on Thursday, March 7, UW-Madison’s season came to an end. The Badgers finished 13-16 overall and 6-13 in league play.
In Thursday’s contest, Ronnie Porter scored nine of her team’s 15 first-quarter points. The Nittany Lions outscored the Badgers by 12, though, taking a 27-15 lead into the second quarter.
There, Sania Copeland and Black Hawk graduate Natalie Leuzinger drained back-to-back 3-pointers. The hot start carried through the rest of the period, as UW cut Penn State’s lead to single digits, 35-27, going into the locker room at halftime.
Penn State outscored UW by four points each in the remaining two quarters to come away with the win.
Porter led the Badgers with 15 points. Serah Williams scored 10 points with 10 rebounds for a double-double, her 16th straight. That mark surpassed Iowa’s Megan Gustafson for consecutive double-doubles in the Big Ten. Leuzinger chipped in 8 points with 3 assists.
The loss marked the end of Leuzinger’s career. She joined the team as a preferred walk-on in 2020 and earned a full-ride scholarship on Aug. 25, 2022. This season, she got her first career start and went on to start in 26 of 29 games.
In her career, Leuzinger averaged 3.1 ppg, with 7.5 ppg as a senior. She shot 82% from the line and 30% from beyond the arc.
