MONTICELLO - A stifling press kick-started the Monticello girls basketball team to a 58-20 win over Highland Monday, Feb. 10.
"We pressed them; we put on a quick half-court press and the defense caused some problems," Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said. "I would say that was the key. We caused quite a few turnovers and were able to execute and score off of them. The girls hustled defensively, did what they needed to do."
Monticello junior Samantha DeVoe scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Ponies. Junior teammate Alyssah Kubly scored 12 points and Jordan Garrison added 10 points.
The Ponies raced out to a 29-11 lead at the half. Monticello (11-7, 6-4 Six Rivers East) didn't let up outscoring the Cardinals 29-9 in the second half.
"We played a clean game," Brokopp said. "Highland didn't even go to the free throw line tonight. I looked at the book and thought, 'I don't know if I've ever seen that.'
"We were able to push it early on. We had eight girls scoring so it was quite the team effort."
Monticello will play at Black Hawk tonight.
"We needed this," Brokopp said. "We play a very tough game tomorrow night in Black Hawk. We lost to them by two last time around, so you know that will be a battle to the end, so I just hope our legs are there for that one."
