MADISON - Monroe High School senior Silas Setterstrom won his first-round match at the WIAA Division 2 state tennis tournament Thursday.
Setterstrom (18-9) scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory over East Troy senior Vince Baxter (18-2) at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. It was Setterstrom's first win at state in his second appearance.
"It's a big win for Silas," Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. "He really started finding his rhythm and started to hit his shots as he settled into the match. It's a big stage to play on and I was proud of his composure against an opponent who played with a little slower pace than Silas is used to. He has a nice opportunity ahead of him as we head into the second day of the tournament."
Setterstrom, the eighth seed, will play Kohler senior Archie Brohn (20-3) in a second-round match at 11 a.m. today.
