VERONA - The Monroe Home Talent baseball team scored seven runs in the ninth inning to come back and stun Verona 11-8 Sunday.
"Any time you can beat Verona and the three-time champs, it's a good win for us," Brewers co-player manager Lon Scheuerell said. "We are back to .500."
Monroe entered the ninth trailing 8-4 and erupted for a big inning off relief pitcher Matthew Gust. Cody Boals led off the ninth with a single. Adam Scherer walked and Matt Busjahn reached on an error to load the bases. Shaun Dasher, who went 2 for 4, delivered a two-run single to slice Verona's lead to 8-6. Mitch Marty knocked in a run with a groundout and Dascher scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 8. Rooney Janecke walked and Scheuerell hit a go-ahead two-run homer to give the Brewers a 10-8 lead. Boals then came through with an RBI single that scored Scott White to cap the scoring.
Monroe was able to score four runs earlier in the game off Monroe graduate Matt Niffenegger. Scheuerell went 3 for 5 to lead the Brewers. Janecke was 2 for 3 and Boals was 2 for 5.
Boals pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs on seven hits. Janecke pitched 2 2/3 innings of no-hit ball in relief to get the win.
Monroe had seven stolen bases in the game.
"We did a lot of the small things to keep us in the game," Scheuerell said.
