MCFARLAND - McFarland won every doubles match to edge the Monroe girls tennis team 4-3 in a dual Monday.

"This was our second match in a row that we were so close to victory, but just couldn't pull it out in the end," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We had a lot of girls play well tonight."

With the loss, Monroe drops to 10-10 in dual matches this season.

The Cheesemakers at moments looked like they would pull out the win in a nail-biting nonconference match. Monroe senior Maggie Setterstrom, at No. 1 singles, defeated McFarland's Michelle Butcher, 6-2, 6-2.

"Maggie forced her opponent into mistakes and took advantage whenever her opponent gave her an opening," Saugstad said.

At No. 2 singles, Monroe sophomore Grace Tostrud beat McFarland's Berit Spilde, 6-0, 6-2.

"Volleying is a major part of Grace's game and I feel that she picked up her volleying level tonight," Saugstad said.

McFarland's Molly McCaulley, at No. 3 singles, defeated Monroe sophomore Emma Towne in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 14-12.

"Emma lost a heartbreaker tonight," Saugstad said. "Emma and her opponent were back and forth the whole night, and played a 2 1/2 hour match in the heat. It came down to a match

tiebreak and each player had opportunities to close out the match. Emma's effort was top notch tonight."

The Spartans' Aeryn Olson, at No. 4 singles, defeated senior Skye Allen, 6-1, 6-1.

Monroe senior Hallie Signer and sophomore Jensen Christensen, at No. 1 doubles, defeated the Spartans' team of Tori Budner-Chapman and Alyssa Obremski, 6-1, 6-3.

"Hallie Signer and Jensen Christensen really picked up their play tonight," Saugstad said. "The Beaver Dam match at the conference tournament really seems to have helped Hallie and Jensen's confidence because tonight was one of their stronger matches."

McFarland's Kendra Wendt and Maggie Boll, at No. 2 doubles, upended Monroe seniors Parris Bunker and Kiara Miller, 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 3 doubles, the Spartans' Annie Stuntebeck and Minnie Moll defeated Monroe juniors Jessa Lucas and Becky Thoman, 7-5, 6-1.
