MONROE — Last Friday morning, representatives, local leaders and members of the public held a memorial to remember the victims and heroes of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which took place 25 years ago.

The memorial took place outside of City Hall and Fire Station 2, where a piece of steel from the World Trade Center South Tower resides.

The steel memorial is an artifact recovered in October 2001 and was presented to the Monroe Fire Department in recognition of the service of the emergency responders that protect the community.

The recovered steel was courtesy of The Port Authority of NY and NJ and is displayed in memory of the 2,742 victims, which included 343 New York City Firefighters, 37 Port Authority Police Officers, and 23 New York City Police Officers.
