MADISON — The Cheesemakers sent three players to the WIAA Division 2 state tennis tournament last weekend, and advanced one out of the opening round.
Ryan Dahlmann, Monroe’s No. 1 singles, was the program’s first singles player to reach the state tournament since Sydnee Wyss in 2006. She defeated Amery’s Signe Halverson in a super tiebreaker thriller, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.
“She started down 0-3 in the first set,” said head coach Matthew Bordner. “She settled in and worked back into the set but wasn’t able to get the flip she needed. The second set was a different story, as Ryann found kept her rhythm early and played extremely well.”
She carried the momentum over into the super tiebreaker to advance to Day 2 of the three-day tournament.
Her teammates, Kaya Holverson and Miah Coppes, playing in the doubles tournament, didn’t fare quite as well. The tandem also played in a very competitive match against Howards Grove’s Addison Stoeckgit and Kamiyah Mansker, but ultimately lost 6-3, 6-3.
“Credit to our opponents as they played really well down the stretch to the get the win,” Bordner said.
Dahlmann’s second match came against Brookfield Academy’s Kylie Matz, the top-seeded player entering the tournament. Matz won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
“She played incredible,” Bordner said. “Ryann finishes an amazing career with over 90 career varsity matches and over 60 wins and will go down as one of the most successful girls tennis players we have had in the past few decades.”
Monroe closed out the season 15-2 overall, and the two flights sent to the state meet is the most since 2004. While the class graduating this spring is large, the program is optimistic it will continue to trend upward.
“We graduate some incredible seniors but also bring back some very talented players next year,” Bordner said.
