VERONA — The Cheesemakers struggled in the high winds against Verona in a dual match March 30, as the Wildcats walked away with a 7-0 sweep.
“The wind was a major factor, and they definitely just played better than us,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. “Verona consistently puts out great tennis teams, so for us to see this level of competition is a good thing. We got some film from our matches that we will be able to review and help us improve which is what this season is all about.”
Kylie Miller lost the No. 1 singles match to Elsa Queoff 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Monroe’s Alicia Brunton won four games but lost 6-2, 6-0. Cecily Burch and Allison Wunschel, playing at No. 2 and 3 singles, were swept 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Monroe’s top flight of Bella and Melena Brunton lost 6-0, 6-2, while Bre Giasson and Sydney Conway fell 6-0, 6-3. Morgan Johnson and Maddy Wells dropped the No. 3 doubles match 6-0, 6-0.
“I think our singles players need to keep working on placement, and our doubles teams need to just get more comfortable at the net and finishing out volleys with better placement as well. While the scores don’t show it, there were some good rallies and battles. It wasn’t always the prettiest, but we played hard and that’s all I can ask for,” Bordner said.
The tennis team is back in action April 2-3 at Elkhorn’s Four Lakes Athletic Club against Stoughton and Monona Grove. The Cheesemakers will then be at Janesville Parker April 6.
